Presiding Judge The Honorable John Sanchez.
Hours of Service are 8 AM to 4 PM thru lunch Monday through Friday, except holidays.
The function of the Magistrate Court is to handle traffic citations and misdemeanor offenses, as well as civil claims for money up to $10,000 dollars, cases that would be handled by Small Claims court in many other states. Felony offenses receive a preliminary hearing in Magistrate Court, at which time the evidence is reviewed to determine whether to reduce the charges to misdemeanor ones, or to leave them as felonies and bind them over to District Court.
The Magistrate Court does not handle Divorce or Custody disputes, or Property and Boundary disputes. These are handled in District Court in Las Vegas.
The Court is open from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. To talk to one of the Clerks call 505-387-2937, and press extension 3 for Ms. Martinez, or 4 for Ms. Rains. Fines can be paid by cash, check or money order. Cash must be the exact amount as we cannot make change. We cannot accept credit cards at this time.
The Court currently has two clerks. Ms. Sofie Martinez is the Chief Clerk and works full time at the Court. Ms. Shelley Rains is the part-time clerk, and is at the Court from 9 AM to 1PM.
If, while travelling through our beautiful and hospitable county, you are unfortunate enough to be issued a citation, normally for speeding, then you can take care of your ticket at the Magistrate Court in Mora. If you are from out-of-state then you can take care of your ticket over the phone with the Magistrate Judge, the Honorable John Sanchez.
Court costs on a traffic citation are $55.00, with any fines on top, and on a misdemeanor are $67.00, again with fines on top. All money received is receipted by computer to the correct case, and a receipt sent to the Payor for their records, so we will need your correct mailing address.
Our aim is to help you take care of your citations as expeditiously as possible, and we aim to provide a high level of courteous service. Our phone system however, does have it's quirks, and you may have to call several times to get through to one of the clerks or their voicemails. We apologise for this, but it is, unfortunately, beyond our control.
